Why I stopped using Eveline 8in1 and every other nail conditioner?

April 27, 2017

I have another story for you. After the "Story about hair "(you can read it here), it seemed like a logical step forward to talk about nails.

So let me tell you about my nails. I have pretty strong nails to begin with and they are usually long. There aren't that many moments when you can see me not wearing nailpolish. I never had acrylics or anything like that, just press ons. There is a question about how bad nailpolish is for us, but today I'm not going to talk about that. I'm going to talk about aren't the regular nailpolishes, but the nail conditioners - for growth, strength and every other nail problem. I'm sure that the most popular one in this region is Eveline Nail Therapy line and their 8in1 nailpolish. I did try all of the polishes in this line and I have to say - they all do the same.

I remember exactly when I first tried it  - it was the summer of 2012. This nailpolish, just like any strengthening nailpolish, contains formaldehyd that actually causes cancer and that it what makes your nails stronger. This is another subject that we can talk about, but after all the things I learned about it - this isn't the reason why I stopped using it.

I used it just like the instructions say - apply one coat every day for 4 days then remove it and repeat the process. You should do that for 10 days (correct me if I'm wrong) and then take a break and repeat if necessary. Even though my nails weren't in a bad shape then, I was on a vacation and my nails would break often after swimming. After the second round of this nail therapy my nails stopped breaking and were much stronger. I was thrilled and recommended the nailpolish to everyone. I'm sure now you're wondering why the heck I stopped using it then...

Since then to the year and a half ago I used that 8in1 nailpolish fairly often, on its own of in a few layers (I liked how it looks) or as a base. Sometimes my nails would hurt a bit and my cuticules were dry. It wasn't so bad so I didn't overthink it. But my nails did break often as soon they would get a bit longer. I was frustrated because they weren't that brittle before and I didn't know what was wrong. The strengthening nailpolish is suppose to make your nails strong and resistant, isn't it? No.

The problem was - my nails wouldn't break just like that, but when they would bump into something. Then they would break off in one piece. And usually I'm not careful, I do things with my hands, so they would break pretty often.

The thing was - nailpolishes like this make your nails even harder and less flexible. But nails are suppose to be strong and flexible. Not to much so you can bend them both ways, but flexible enough so they would bend under pressure and not break. That is exactly why my nails would break so easily - they were too hard, and I had to trim them and start all over again. And it is important to know - healthy nails are made at the base of the nail, deep under the cuticles - where they are formed, not when they are grown out. You can make a difference in this stage by healthy diet. That is connected to the question - can any product that you use on the outside have any effect on making your nails grow faster. And the answer is - they can't. Your body is mainly (and what you put in it) responsible for how fast your nails are growing. So the "nail growth" nailpolishes are gimmicky. To add on, those nailpolishes that claim to "heal" and "put together" broken layers of the nails... Ask yourself is that really possible? Don't be naive, this is the same as the hair and split ends. Nothing can magically glue them together. You can only cut them off.

I don't remember exactly why I stopped using those nailpolishes , but my nails are so much better now. I can grow them out without breakage. You can see how they look now on the photo below. But, I wear contact lenses, so they make it so hard for me to take them out, so I will make them shorter soon. Since we're on this topic, I refuse to cut my nails because under pressure, they are more likely to break where you don't want them to break - usually much closer to the nail bed that you really wanted in the first place. Or, the cut will be uneven. So I just file them down with a glass or that paper nailfile. But I have to admit, I liked the metal nailfiles the most, but they aren't good for the nails.

Ništa strašno i nisam tome pridavala toliku pažnju.

So now, when I bump my nails into something, they don't break 99% of the times. It just leaves a white stripe over the nail, caused my trauma. This spot then marks the nails weakest spot do I usually just wait for it to grow out and then file it down as soon as possible, to prevent breaking. And let me tell you - my nails mostly break or get that white line when I don't wear nailpolish. Which means that the nailpolishes are good in one way - they create that protective layer over the nail.

The fact is that the thing that keeps the nail layers together is oil (and the water breaks them apart). So you may noticed that your nails are wider and more straight when you soak them in water for a longer time period. My current nail situation is - my nails have strong natural C curve, which means they curve inwards at the top a lot. They get straighter and the C curve gets softer when my nails are soaked in a water - which means that they are dry and that they need moisture - oils. The jojoba oil is the best. Whey the nails are soaked in water, they get weaker and more prone to breakage. The water also strips the nail bed form its natural oils, so I also prevent that by wearing nailpolish to create a protective layer.

The conclusion is - you have to be able to recognize if and when you truly need nail conditioners, and not to use them for a long period of time. And remember that diet is the key. You have to admit - it doesn't make any sense to put a shiny new top layer over the nail when it is weak and damaged underneath all of that and to expect it would somehow make them healthy over the night.

So the next time you wonder why are your nails breaking even though you're using nail conditioner, you should really ask yourself if your nails need help from the outside or from the inside. And - if by using them, you're doing more harm than good.
